Handyman of the Year 2013
The UK Guild of Handymen has chosen Steve Lyden as Handyman of the Year for 2013 in recognition of his efforts in raising the profile and public awareness of handymen and for his general input within the handyman trade.
The Guild were particularly impressed that Steve, lobbied mybuilder.com to get them to recognise the UK Guild of Handymen as ‘the’ trade association for handymen. He also made efforts to negotiate a discounted insurance deal for members and has made several contributions to the Guild’s online blog.
With a degree in construction management, Steve has over 35 years repair/maintenance experience and for 10 years was employed overseeing large scale social housing refurbishment.
It was within this role he realised the demand for the smaller jobs falling outside the trades’ normal scope or not covered by their work contract. Hence, 0800oddjobs.com, Steve’s Lancaster-based professional handyman service, was born tailored to small-scale maintenance.
The demand for smaller jobs in the area is sufficient to keep Steve constantly busy within a radius of just five miles and while he doesn’t compete for larger jobs (like kitchen or bathroom fitting) he often undertakes finishing and snagging work for other busy companies.
The business has steadily expanded adding mature experienced staff and a network partners within the local area. Also a member of Trading Standards ‘Safe Trader Scheme’ receiving an Excellence award in 2012 with customer feedback that ranks the highest in the area.
The Guild is always encouraged to learn of handymen that take their multi-skilled profession so seriously and endorse our motto: Experience, Competence, Excellence
IMPORTANT: This award is not a measure of who does the best work but who, in the opinion of the Guild, has done the most to further the handyman industy.
