Not always a leak

At this time of the year (winter) the mains water is very cold and can lead you to think you have a leak when it is only condensation. A toilet cistern in particular, being normally in a bathroom where the air can be very moist, will readily allow the saturated air to condense onto the cold surfaces of the cistern. This happens most when the loo has just been flushed and there is a fresh fill of really cold water. The condensation can often trickle down both the front and sides of the cistern, then underneath finally dripping off onto the floor.
I once stayed in a guest house in New England (USA) where they had such a problem with this that they deliberately piped the toilet up to the hot water supply giving a whole new meaning to the expression ‘hot flushes.’

My latest tool in my kit an iPad mini.

As a handyman why would I need an iPad? Here’s a ten quick reasons without much thinking—

1) When I’m working somewhere I don’t know, I can use the internet to find the local Toolstation, plumber’s merchant, B&Q or whatever.
2) I have access to my emails to know exactly what I quoted to do (I do all my quotes by email)
3) I can research and call up things to show the client that I might need to buy against a job and show them what it is and how much it will cost.
4) They can select from say a range of door handles if any choice is required.
5) I can call up exploded diagrams of say a shower valve to see how it comes apart.
6) I can take before and after pictures of my work for reference or promotional purposes.
7) I can check my diary (kept on the iPad) for if I need to book to come back, book another job or see where I’m going next.
8) I’ve got a built-in sat-nav in case I get lost or can’t find my way to where I’m going.
9) I can produce and email a receipt to my client straight after the job.
10) I can play Angry Birds to hone my manual dexterity between jobs.

PS Happy new year to any readers
